to whom it may concern: independence day

sunset moon

how it ought to be, if not how it is:
how it feels is more important than how it looks
is it real? There is nothing else for it to be
I do not acknowledge your authority
but neither do I challenge it
the power imbalance between us
makes that wise

to whom it may concern, i claim the rights to my own flesh
to whom it may concern, I claim the rights to my own name
to whom it may concern, I claim the rights to my own story
to whom it may concern, i claim the right to my own self

how it will and must be, if we are to survive
is opening hearts and trusting all else that is alive
how it feels matters more than how it seems
is it real? of course, and so are we
there is no need nor reason for authority
lay down your laws, and learn how to divine
the truth that makes us wise

to whom it may concern, my flesh is not your business
to whom it may concern, my life is not your business
to whom it may concern, my travels are not your business
to whom it may concern, my feelings are not your business

be a little bit crazy, and a little bit amazing
and a little bit in love with your whole life
you’ll make mistakes it’s guaranteed but that doesn’t
change your basic needs, become your own authority
To every question, there is an answer, but the story
never ends, and who cares if you’re wise?

to whom it may concern, I declare my independence day
to whom it may concern, it is here and now, today
to whom it may concern, I declare myself a sovereign state
to whom it may concern, act now, before it is too late
