I have never done this much flying all jammed together like this. It gives me a new appreciation for those who do. And it sorta makes me long for when we start running out of gas and this sort of flying becomes impossibly expensive.

cmkl: On to Calgary
It’s a lot easier to train two people than eight. Especially when one of them used to produce websites. Today I think went pretty well. We were done a bit early and I had a chance to shoot the breeze with two awesome women who work for my employer in t…
Continue readingcmkl: And now, Saskatoon
The Paris of the Prairies. If I’m lucky there’ll be enough time post training and pre-flight to walk along the river. Today went pretty well. The folks in the Winnipeg office are using Contribute to edit their static site, so the cut paste and post reg…
Continue readingcmkl: Winnipeg seems in great shape
I don’t visit all that often. But generally speaking I’ve been here every few years. I tend to measure the health of the people and the province by how much plywood I see covering shop windows on Portage Ave. And as Manitobans head into an election, Po…
Continue readingcmkl: The Prairie tour begins tomorrow
So I’m heading out west for a three day Drupal training tour starting tomorrow evening. Winnipeg tomorrow, then Saskatoon, then Calgary. Back home on Friday. When we arranged this tour it seemed to sort of make sense. We’ll see how I feel when I get back.
Continue readingcmkl: Life before photoshop
Special effects. Wow. I have to laugh at some of the things that were done in the name of ‘enhancing’ photographs in the pre-Photoshop era. Sandwiching two slides together. Taking a picture then winding the film back and shooting again. Colouring nega…
Continue readingcmkl: Exhuming Kodachromes
And Ektachromes. In an attempt to shed stuff I have purchased a slide/negative scanner and have been spending some time digitizing the tons and tons of little yellow plastic boxes I have full of slides.
Continue readingcmkl: Sleepover
Mallory’s friend C. Is over for my daughter’s first sleepover. Earlier we were worried that Mallory wouldn’t have the courage to sleep with a non-parent. She has only ever slept with her Auntie Janet before.
Continue readingcmkl: As kid-focused and limited as it was
This weekend’s trip really did whet my appetite for this September’s canoe trip with my friend Martin. We’re going to Killarney Park this time. Something of a re-do of trips I’ve done before, but we’re going through some terrain I’ve never seen and Kil…
Continue readingcmkl: Heading to Frontenac Park. This should be interesting
We’re heading off tomorrow for some canoe-in camping. With the whole fam. Frontenac Park. No portages, but we do have to take all our stuff with us in the canoe and leave the car behind. Figure we’ll stay there for the whole reservation?
Continue readingcmkl: Frustrating evening with the machine
I’m trying to do two things with my computer. Actually now that I’m writing my post-of-the-day, it’s three. Let’s see if we can go Oh for Three.
Continue readingcmkl: Francis Fuels: customer service heroes
It’s a bit unusual for me to be crowing about a product or service, but the service technicians at Francis Fuels really do deserve praise. For the last little bit – like since they got our HRV working and we’ve had heat – there’s been this little water…
Continue readingcmkl: Stephen Harper wants to be the public service’s best friend, or rather he did
Or rather he did. Before getting elected. This deserves more attention. “We have no plans to cut departmental program spending” Harper wrote in the Ottawa Citizen in 2006.
Continue readingcmkl: And we’re back
So we beetled home today, anticipating much caterwauling on the part of Mallory who made it abundantly clear she did not want to leave. More specifically, “I hate camping. There’s bugs. I want to stay here.” But alas it was time.
Continue readingcmkl: Enforced relaxation
It’s amazing how long I can spend sitting on a dock staring out at a lake. I suspect Irene will find this a bit disconcerting, but I could almost get used to this. Except I know there’s another reality to this business of cottage life.
Continue readingcmkl: Regatta
Mallory entered her first race ever yesterday. The girl’s under six flutterboard race. If not for the swimmer’s ear I think she could have done the swimming race. But we’re still trying to keep her head above water. Difficult at a cottage in hot, sunny…
Continue readingcmkl: Family fun
We’re here at my uncle and aunt’s cottage in the Muskokas. We don’t see each other all that often but the scene is always amazing to me. What tends to happen is that Mallory – who’s normally quite shy – folds immiscibly into the mobile blur that is “th…
Continue readingcmkl: And speaking of relatively easy
Upgrading to PHP 5.3 has only netted me one significant problem that I am about to investigate. Of course by typing these words I am inviting the discovery of a major life or death problem.
Continue readingcmkl: Booking in Killarney was easier than I thought
I have booked me another canoe trip. My friend Martin and I are staking out the second or third weekend in September as our new traditional canoe trip weekend. In the last two years we’ve gone to Algonquin and Chiniguchi.
Continue readingcmkl: Crime rates and government spending
So crime rates continue to decline. Not just nuisance crimes and property crimes but also crimes where people get hurt or worse. And it’s been going this way for nigh on forty years.
