“Canadian winters are long. Life is hard and so is ice. Canadian teams playing within the NHL are, in effect, a microcosm of Canada’s ongoing process of trying to remain a country – battling constantly not only against Americans but against other teams from within their own country. It’s ugly

A BCer in Toronto: Phoenix Coyotes vs. Winnipeg Jets
When I saw that the Coyotes would be playing their home-opener vs. the Winnipeg Jets the day after I was scheduled to leave Phoenix on my work trip, I knew I had to extend my trip to catch the game. Here’s some pics and video from Saturday. Was a tough…

From Ken Gray’s blog… Facebook friend Jean-Pierre Allard commented on my blog post Don Cherry Must Go Because of Latest Outrage. Looks like the the new NHL franchise in Winnipeg may not be as friendly to its adoptive ‘owner’ and his political party as one would think. The club, dubbed the Harper Jets because of its modified Conservative logo and the aggressive manner i…

This has nothing to do with ‘judgement’ but with racism. Pure and simple.London police nab the man who threw the banana peel at Philadelphia Flyer Wayne Simmonds. He was charged with ‘engaging in a prohibited activity on a premise under the provincial …
Continue readingYou’re right Mr. Harper, I no longer recognize Canada: banana peel thrown at LA Kings’ Wayne Simmonds in London, ON
I never thought I’d see this but in a hockey pre-season tilt in London, ON, a black player was the recipient of not one but two banana peels, one of them reaching the ice. That player, Wayne Simmonds, took this vile racist act with class, saying, “I’m …

Did you notice any Canadians yesterday wrestling “with questions about possible flaws in the national character after a riot in Vancouver?”I didn’t (and isn’t that a bit of a racially – or at least nationally – loaded suggestion). But like many, I sur…

It has been called riveting, strange, even nasty. The Vancouver Boston series has been one of the most interesting series I have ever watched. I won’t do any analysis, I don’t think that at this point it would be worthwhile…
Continue readingScott's DiaTribes: Things that bug me about the Stanley Cup
One thing that really annoys me is banks making commercials trying to gain favour by going all nationalistic and pulling out the “Canada hasn’t won a Stanley Cup in 18 years!”. A newsflash to them and to a lot of fans saying the same thing: this isn’t the Olympics. This is 2 teams representing their cities, not their countries. There are as many Canadians on Boston’s team as Vancouver’s. Last year’s Stanley Cup champions, the Chicago Black Hawks, had the most Canadians of any team in the playoffs. Why weren’t they “Canada’s team?”
Let’s save the fervour of cheering for your country at actual Canada vs USA games at […]

Way back in the before time, when I was a young’un, in my circle of friends there was an arrogant little shit by the name of Scott Browntree.
