Disclaimer: I admit this post will be a simple re-iteration of the fantastic post by Emily Dee here who documented all this stuff. She did all the hard work, I just thought I should summarize it in order to bring more attention to it. Go and read it, it’s better than this post.
Our media seems to shy from journalism, so I’m here to use my tiny influence to propose something simple: question the powers and powers to be. Particularly Stephen Harper’s extreme right-wing white supremacist roots.
Stephen Harper, as we all know, was a member of the former Reform – a party with more radical views than the current watered-down administration. But, something most people don’t know pertains to the former organizations known as the Northern Foundation and Heritage Front.
Northern Foundation was a extreme-right group, originally created to protest the end of apartheid/segregation of the indigenous African population in South Africa. It existed to promote certain values that could only be described as white supremacist, sexist and all other things radical right. Another purpose of this group was to house and unify a mess of other right-wing groups, such as Real Women Canada. This group was co-founded in 1989 by our current Prime Minister, Stephen Joseph Harper, along with William Gairdner (a key member of the Reform party, as well as the NCC) – an active anti-feminist critic.
Now, there’s very little we know about the Northern Foundation, except that it existed to spouse extreme right-wing views. One thing we do have an inkling of is the connections to the sometimes militant neo-Nazi group Heritage Front. An even more right-wing organization, promoting white purity and even more denigration of opponents.
This neo-Nazi group Heritage Front was founded by Wolfgang Droege after being inspired by the radical right at a Northern Foundation conference. A few members from the Northern Foundation went and joined the Heritage Front, and worked and supported both.
Our current Prime Minister, leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, can – in part – be credited for the creation of the neo-Nazi group Heritage Front and the “father” organization that inspired it: the Northern Foundation.
For example of their militancy:
…a Tamil immigrant, Sivarajah Vinasithamby, was brutally beaten by neo-Nazis outside the Tasty restaurant and is now in hospital, partly paralyzed and in a coma. One Nazi skinhead, Jason Robert Hoolans, has been charged; he has links with the Heritage Front and the Church of the Creator.
This is something that Harper can be traced to, albeit indirectly. I’m not accusing Harper of being a neo-Nazi (I don’t think he is) or a fascist. I am merely presenting facts, as far as we know, in order to push a greater inquiry. And open up a greater dialogue, perhaps.
