Praise The Senate For Doing Something Business and Governments Wont

“Women hold up half the sky” – Mao Zedong

Two Conservative bloggers have taking a legitimate issue about women in our country and instead turned it into political theatre. One such blogger who calls himself BC Blue called Liberal Senator Celine Hervieux-Payette “Kooky” and “nutbar” for wanting to pass a bill that guarantees equal representation on boards of directors across Canada. For the text of the bill see Bill S-206: Board of Directors Gender Parity Act. This act would enshrine into law equality among all publicly traded companies, banks and and crown corporations. It would be nice to see BC Blue actually speak against this for reasons of corporate control or keeping the government out of the boardrooms, but no. Instead, he laughs off the Senator as nutty and proclaims that this is a reason to abolish the Senate.

So let me get this straight. A Liberal senator, who is a women, is trying to force gender equality among publicly traded companies, banks and crown corporations because they apparently aren’t working hard enough to equalize on their own, and this is a reason to abolish the Senate? Hell, I’ve railed against the Senate more times then I can remember, and I think this is a reason to stand up and praise the Senate for trying to do something our own government, businesses and banks haven’t deigned to do themselves.

That’s not all though. Alberta Aardvark also has a problem with this bill, because apparently it conflicts with the Charter of Rights. He’s even calling on Justin Trudeau to defend the Constitution against this. Huh? As far as I knew, equal representation for men, women, and equality amongst all races was enshrined IN the Charter. So…if I’m wrong and somewhere in the Charter it says that women aren’t equal and that corporations owned by us, the people, should not represent equally both genders, and I’ll eat my hat.
