LETTERS, LETTERS, LETTERS – PUBLIC OUTRAGE OVER PROROGATION

The local paper, after publishing the Conservative talking points a ridiculous editorial offering lame excuses for prorogation, has published a number of letters in response. Here is a selection of exerpts from those letters:“I find it disgusting that the day we sadly heard of the latest four fallen soldiers who fought for a democratic government in Afghanistan, Mr. Harper shut Canada’s down.” ~ Blaine Leal”Oshawa MP Colin Carrie’s statements of course are the party line, as happens in many countries which we criticize. Hopefully some day democracy may return and our elected representatives will be able to speak their own mind.” ~ Norm Bear”Any competent finance minister should be capable of overseeing the preparation of such a budget while Parliament is in session. I believe the prime minister prorogued Parliament to avoid the scrutiny and embarrassing facts that his government was subject to. I believe the majority of Canadians agree with me in spite of Stephen Harper’s belief that Canadians are apathetic and don’t care what he does to our Parliamentary system.” ~ Don Mattison”The fact that this Conservative government has done so “for the games” in the midst of numerous scandals, including the Afghan detainee saga, smells of a lame excuse…When Canadians need good government, the Conservatives offer only lame excuses. The ever-growing 85,000 member anti-prorogation Facebook group is evidence enough that Canadians believe the legislature matters more than the luge.” ~ Chris Harshman”I couldn’t agree more with (Oshawa Conservative MP) Colin Carrie when he says he thinks Canadians realize the proroguing of our government is part of what they do. Yes, it’s obviously part of their continuing efforts to protect and serve the Conservative party (and its backers) at the expense of the public’s right to representation in Parliament.” ~ Randy Gostlin”There are many who suspect the Conservatives have shut down Parliament for the second time in as many years because they do not want to face tough questions about detainee abuses in Afghanistan. Avoiding the situation may be a tactic appropriate for a nine year old, but it is not an appropriate tactic for our Parliament.” ~ Kevin Smith”Make no mistake: the decision to kill over 30 government bills and suspend the business of governing was a calculated political ploy to allow the Conservative government to escape accountability and avoid scrutiny over its many well-documented scandals and attempted coverups. To suggest otherwise is ludicrous” ~ Michael Maynard And then there’s always this and this, the latter of which is now well beyond 150,000 members and growing with pace! And lastly, here’s a great video from noprorogue.ca about the growing anti-prorogation sentiment, and how you can get involved in taking back our democratic rights as citizens in a Parliamentary democracy.
