Mitt Romney tries to humanize himself by going shopping. I think most people feel the same way when they hear Paul Ryan speak Stephen Harper signs a deal with China, expressly to try and win the “cutest photo op of the year” award. Danielle Smith sees your cute animal and

Blast Furnace Canada Blog: Now we finally know the real price of milk, thanks to the teabags
We’re all familiar with the concept of a loss leader — a store will deliberately price key products to a price below cost, often way below cost. This is to get people into the store to buy stuff that is overpriced. A good example are razor handles and blades —

Fuck the USA!* *and to be fair, fuck Canada for allowing the Harper Conservatives to drag our country through the muck, down the same failed, destructive and suicidal path as our neighbours to the south Yeah, I know there are many good and decent individual Americans, and I acknowledge that

Antonin “Nino” Scalia, the current dean of the US Supreme Court and a very staunch conservative, has always had a way with words especially in the opinions he authors for the majority or in dissent. There is no question he is a champion of free speech and expression — he

We’re starting to see the fallout from the Con government’s proposed changes to immigration policy. And while I agree that such policies need a reboot every now and then to meet current trends (and to a lesser extent, changes in social morés), what is shaping up to be what we’ll

You really should watch this video. It explains in clear, simple terms the argument of the billionaires and the rest of us. I like it because – while it’s simplistic – it is succinct and presents its argument in a … Continue reading →

There are always at least two sides to every story. Long ago, in the American West, some pioneers and cowboys were killed by “Indians”. More recently, Iraqi “insurgents” have killed US soldiers. When I was growing up, Vietnamese “guerillas” – I believe…
Continue readingBlast Furnace Canada Blog: "State" of Palestine? Where *and for what why)?
Yesterday, the UN General Assembly voted to grant Palestine the same status as the Vatican — “non member observer state.” I have the feeling that if we in Canada had a Liberal or ND government, this country would have voted to abstain as more than 40 countries did. That’s the position
Continue readingProgressive Proselytizing: Let’s do nothing in the US Senate just a little bit longer
Lindsay Graham For years I have decried the broken US Senate and its rules – exacerbated by the filibuster – that make it a hopelessly ineffective body that, through its inability to competently pass legislation, is inherently conservative. The misuse of the arcane filibuster rule, by which a supermajority of 60 of

After watching the recent, exaggerated – and sordid – upheaval over the story about an extramarital affair that the (now former) head of the CIA had with his biographer, I have come to several conclusions about America, sex, American medi…

The riots we’ve been seeing across the European Union — not just the 17 countries inside Euroland but also the 10 that are not — are the result of people being fed up with having the cradle to grave welfare state being clawed back or almost eliminated. Here in Canada

Richard ‘Hub’ Hughes-Political Blogger
For decades our politicians have pouted over the question of legalization often throwing their hands in the air pointing to the US War on Drugs as evidence that they could not possibly legalize cannabis here in Canada.
Well the air has just been let out of that balloon.
Washington State and Colorado residents voted for regulated legalization and will now set out to kick the plans into gear.
This has really ruffled the feathers of our BC politicians and their Federal counterparts. What to do now? OMG the pressure is on!
I’m sure glad I have a driver! I can’t stop giggling and I have the munchies!
What are our politicans thinking?
The latest polling shows 75 percent of Canadians want the funny tobacco legalized.
It is really only a minority bolstered by those who profit in the deadly drug trade that want to see legalization blocked.
It is disappointing to see our Liberal and NDP leaders ducking the issue. They have in unison kicked the ball over to the Ottawa crowd.
Christy! What was in those Timbits?
Both Premier Christie Clark and BC NDP leader Adrian Dix conveniently ignore the fact that Premiers and their Attorney Generals can take steps provincially by instructing our police forces and prosecutors to lay off busting people for simple possession of marijuana.
Canada’s Premier’s should be lobbying Ottawa to listen to the strong majority desire for and end to prohibition.
I still don’t feel any different. It doesn’t seem to work for me. Can I have some timbits?
PM Harper embraces the 1930′s ‘Reefer Madness’ attitude to the devil weed and would just as soon jail pot puffers.
NDP leader Thomas Mulcair has balked, flip flopped and spoken against liberalizing present laws that turn otherwise law abiding citizen into criminals.
He has sadly demonstrated that he too is out of touch with Canadian attudes towards the failed ‘War on Drug’s.’
Bob Rae, Federal Liberal Interim leader has said that what we have in place is not working and we really have to look at a different approach.
Federal Liberal Leadership hopeful Justin Trudeau appears to be poised to actually step up, but so far he has been bob and weaving. He may surprise in later rounds of the bout.
Thwer has been a clear call from the Young Liberals to end the prohibition that has failed miserably.
Most Canadian Politicans, not all, are out of touch with the mood of the nation.
It is not too late for our politicians to take a deep breath and seize the moment. It will be most revealing to watch the dance that follows.

Continue readingCalgary Grit: Another Argument Against Legalizing Pot Goes Up In Smoke
In the midst of a largely status-quo election, several groundbreaking ballot initiatives passed last night. Puerto Rico voted to apply for statehood. Same sex marriage was legalized in Maine and Maryland, and was upheld in Washington State, snapping a 32 vote losing streak for equal marriage proponents. And both Washington State and Colorado voted for complete marijuana legalization and regulation. The implications of this in Canada could be far reaching, and I’m not just talking about a spike in “road … →

Calgary Grit: Election Day in Ohio
While I may not be as overdosed on hope and change as I was four years ago, I’ll be rooting for Barack Obama tonight. I could write a lengthy treatise comparing policy positions and promises, but the short of it is I like the guy and I think he’d make a better President than Mitt Romney. I suspect that’s what it boils down to for most voters, so I’ll leave the deep analysis to those who follow US politics more … →
