Gawd bless Amurrica! This was uploaded by Hooters itself, two days before the 9-11 x 10 mourn-a-thon. I believe the underlying message is “Eat greasy wings and ogle these Twin Towers (hurr hurr, geddit?), or the terrorists win!”

Art Threat: 28 films on 9/11 and its impact on our world
Over the past decade, filmmakers across the globe have tackled issues that have come about as a direct consequence of 9/11 and the United States’ response to the attacks.

“If a man has an apartment stacked to the ceiling with newspapers we call him crazy. If a woman has a trailer house full of cats we call her nuts. But when people pathologically hoard so much cash that they impoverish the entire nation, we put them on the cover of Fortune magazine and pretend […]

Divide between West, Muslim societies ‘irreconcilable’: poll A majority of Canadians believes conflict between Western nations and the Muslim world is "irreconcilable," according to a new national survey that revealed a strong strain of pessimism in the country leading up to Sunday’s 10th anniversary commemorations of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the U.S. The survey of 1,500 Canadians, conducted over three days last week for the Montreal-based Association for Canadian Studies, showed 56 per cent of respondents see Western and Muslim societies locked in an unending ideological struggle, while about 33 per cent — just one-third of the population — held out hope that the conflict will eventually be overcome. Are those who voted in favour of the "unending ideological struggle" reacting to Muslims? Or are they reacting to what’s been written about Muslims and about Islam by those whose motives are, shall we say, less than pure? There’s been a well organized and well funded campaign to convince that 56% of the respondents that their fears and concerns are justified. Some of it is motivated by the obvious: fear of the other. Some of it is an effort to sell newspapers and raise ratings. And some of it…

Dear Leaders:I have made the decision that unless one of you does something so egregious that it merits a comment I will not — will not –make any running commentary about the current election in Ontario. Frankly, the platforms are all uni…

I got a little carried away Thursday evening at a quilting auction in Perth.
Elva Jackson, a quilter from the Lanark County Quilting Guild, died last year and her husband donated her fabric stash and quilting books to the Guild for auction. The proceeds went to Dignity House.
I bid early and I bid often. […]
Continue readingRecreating Eden: Debussy’s The Submerged Cathedral for the Day after the Tenth Anniversary
Debussy’s piano prelude is inspired by the idea of a cathedral that was submerged in some magical/mythic/horrible way. Beauty is not a stranger to disaster. I’ve long thought the shots of the Twin Towers’ ruins were magnificent. It would be nice to…
Continue readingNorthern Reflections: Them!
The paranoia of the 1950’s is perhaps best captured in the 1954 film, Them!, a ninety-four minute saga which turned on two common themes of the day — nuclear Holocaust and Communist subversion. In the film, a species of gigantic irradiated ants threat…
Continue readingAccidental Deliberations: Leadership 2012: Group Decisions
This week figures to see the first official entries into the NDP’s leadership race. But it’s well worth noting some of the work being done behind the scenes – whether by the candidates themselves or not – to test the grassroots support for possible lea…

Skattered throughout Vancouver, bus stop shelters have been turned from ad space to sheet music. Adorno and Nose, as the piece is called, is a collection of ten songs composed and illustrated by Barry Doupe and James Whitman. Each poster contains a different song, notated as standard sheet music, the verse, and a drawn graphic. […]

I refused to watch any of yesterday’s ceremonies honouring those who were killed 10 years ago in New York. I refused, not out of disrespect for those who lost their lives and for all who still suffer tremendously as a result of that horrible attack. …

The problem with making a reasonable argument is that it takes time and patience to construct properly. Nonstampcollector makes a great video showing exactly how unonbjective the christian god actually is. Guaranteed to make the religious cringe as they face contradiction after contradiction, and precisely why the video appears on this blog. Filed under: Religion […]

Continue readingScott's DiaTribes: Miscellaneous Ontario election campaign tidbits
A couple of things here and there this AM:
Eric Grenier of threehundredeight.com has a piece in the Globe and Mail about his seat projections for the Ontario election. If the election were held today, based on recent poll results, he gives the Conservatives and Liberals each 44 seats, with the NDP holding the balance of power at 19. Yes, that is still a sizable seat loss for the governing Liberals, and it still might put their hold on government in jeopardy if that result were to pan out, but considering where the polls were 2-3 months ago, and considering they seem to have Tim Hudak and the Conservatives […]

Worth noting, that prior to this “foreigners” debate in Ontario, the Liberals campaign slogan was already “Forward.Together”. There was a reason for the theme, people appreciate the notion of all oars in the water toward a common goal. As well, there i…

If you’re reading this right now you are doing something that I have refused to do: read any coverage or analysis of 9/11. I am boycotting the wall to wall coverage – the pull-out specials in the newspapers, the live coverage of ceremonies at ground ze…

I don't think that Tim Hudak, or his Party as a whole, is against new Canadians but gosh they do not seem to be able to control some of their more problematic potential MPPs. Of course, as an immigrant myself, I may be biased: Hudak trips on politi…
