What Canadian Progressives Can Learn From VikiLeaks

Both the Rogue Page and VikiLeaks threw Harper’s Canadian Republicans completely off their game and most progressive Canadians loved it. The Harper Gang never saw these actions coming so they were unable to react quickly to issue their usual opinion shaping spin.

Encumbered as they are by the web Harper’s spun for them, woven with political correctness and fear, progressive politicians spend altogether too much time being proper and polite, telegraphing their strategy in media scrums. The NDP came out this week with numerous statements on how they were going to operate in opposition. They talked and talked and talked. have done the same. “We’re going to fight back with our own ads.” Blah, blah, blah.

The fact is, whether politicians approve of the method or not, sometimes the end does justify the means. Social media is here and it can do unexpected things whether the political establishment in Ottawa likes it or approves of it or not. If progressive politicians continue to be ineffective in countering Harper’s Canadian Republican spin machine, individuals will feel more and more compelled to take action any way they can.
