There is nothing lower in human life than an undercover cop. They are supreme cowards and nothing less than snitches. The G20 cops who narc’d on the 17 accused of causing ‘mayhem’ at Toronto’s G20 deserve to have their identities exposed, as has already been the case with the leaking of their ID’s on the internet, and are now protected by the courts.
Lawyers for the 17 accused, now in the early stages of a preliminary hearing, argued on Tuesday that there should be no such prohibition, but the Crown won the first round.
In an interim ruling, Mr. Justice Gerald Lapkin ordered that the two officers should remain anonymous. A later hearing will determine the scope and length of the ban, after media outlets have been given a chance to challenge it.
The two officers – one male, one female – are central to the Crown’s case against the 17 defendants. And they would, in any case, be shielded for now by the customary blanket ban on the airing of any evidence heard during the preliminary hearing, which will decide if some or all of the accused go to trial.
But if there is a trial by judge and jury, as all 17 have opted for, anything heard by the jury, including the names of witnesses, is normally reportable.
