News I never thought I’d hear: Rebekah Brooks resigns

Unapologetic head of News International resigns. This is huge. Surely a harbinger of things to come. If only the whole Murdoch empire would crumble. Did Ms.Brooks sacrifice herself for ‘daddy’ Murdoch? Did she fall on her sword to protect herself? I love her story – secretary who made good – but like a lot of successful people, what did she do to get there? And what forced her out? These people never step down or acknowledge their behaviour. Does she actually know the difference between wrong and right?

(As always, follow the live coverage by the only real newspaper in the UK, the Guardian. This is the biggest story of the year. It is the defining moment, a moment when the conservative media meets the wall. It will be interesting to see how the media responds. The Murdoch, Black and Peladeau empires are ignoring it. It will say volumes about the ethics and morality of our media how the Globe and Mail will portray this. The fall of Brooks and co. is the Globe’s story as well. It also says everything about Stephen Harper, who got where he is on the backs on dishonest journalists.)

When they make the movie of this, I hope Julianne Moore plays Rebekah Brooks.
