There are certain principles that an individual cannot break, no matter what the situation is. Principles like, I can never kill anyone unless its in self-defense or I will never violently hit a child or a woman no matter what the circumstance.
These are individual and societal principles, and they vary from person to person and from civilization to civilization. They depend on the level of education of the society in which the individual lives, on their childhood, on parenting and on certain philosophy.
With political principles, things are a little bit different. It can be said that no one political principle is absolute or not amiable to change.
The Liberal Party, as far as it being centrist, attempts to provide the greatest amount of flexibility in representation.
So, if you’re a bit or far on the right, well, we’ve got policies that will cater to your needs, or if you’re on the left, then we’ve got what you want also. I think that’s what a true party of the center should aspire to do.
Thus, the possibility of certain views clashing within the liberal party and amongst its constituents is fairly high due to this centrism. But usually the views are not so irreconcilable that we cannot find a middle ground through debate.
I wasn’t surprised at all to find out that Harper’s hatred of the Liberal Party, according to him loathing of the Liberals’ relativist and kind of care-free power oriented approach to politics, is still going strong even after winning a majority.
We liberals recognize a fundamental truth: Change exists and it is inevitable in all areas of existence, from physical existence to metaphysics, from society to political life, from law to religion etc. Change is an inescapable fact of life.
Individual principles are also affected by change; And the individuals that refuse to adapt theirs to the rest of civilization are usually ostracised by society and eventually become irrelevant.
In his actions, sometimes, but mostly in his speeches since May, Harper has re-iterated countless times how this relativism that plagues the Liberal Party of Canada is what precipitated its loss in the recent federal elections.
The man, and his party, doesn’t even realize how much of a hypocrite he actually is. Since coming to power in 2006, the conservatives have implemented record breaking increases in government spending, have run the country economically on a perpetual deficit, implemented vote-buying tax policies, they centralized power even more than the Liberals, have set up slush funds etc.
The truth is, the Conservatives haven’t had a track record of sticking to their principles. Sure they talk about them alot but never really implement them in their policies.
And why is that? Could it be because they’ve realized that most Canadians have liberal tendencies, that they don’t like political and ideological extremes?
So considering the Canadians’ ideological inclinations, the Conservatives have about a snowball’s chance in hell to actually be conservative, both in their policies and applied ideology.
In my opinion, the Conservative party of Canada is nothing but a Liberal Party wannabe. Like children they envy the liberals still.
