When I think about Pierre Trudeau’s leadership of the Liberal Party I also think about the team he had around him. A party isn’t led by one person and the strength of the elder Trudeau’s leadership can also be measured by the type of people he attracted to his team.
According to the G&M:
The Liberals back then were the masters of the political universe, the most formidable political machine in the country. They were led by the enigmatic Pierre Trudeau, and leading figures like Allan MacEachen, Marc Lalonde, Keith Davey and Jim Coutts were like rock stars in world of Canada’s national affairs.
Instead of just literally putting another Trudeau in the leadership, perhaps we should be looking more closely at the leadership team we need to create. When leadership candidates finally do emerge, watch closely to see who the younger Trudeau chooses to support.
