Pillow Talk: Frank De Vol’s masterpiece?

“Like a pot-bellied stove … on a frosty morning.”

I grew up with this movie on TV. It wasn’t until recently that I found out much of my enjoyment of this flick was not so much the snappy dialogue or the wonderful performances by Day and Hudson but by the score.

The movie opens with a catchy pop tune sung by Day. It begins that is with a killer bass line I swear is Carol Kaye, so magical in its precision. After the song is over, De Vol continues the theme for the rest of the introductory part of the movie. It’s sheer magic.

One of my pet peeves about modern movies is that directors and producers know nothing about music and tend to abuse sound. Frank De Vol and director Michael Gordon play a nimble game here, perfectly capturing every nuance of the pace and humour of the dialogue. It’s a joy to watch. And hear.
