The mystery of 2011. Republicans keep winning races despite pathetic presidential candidates.

While the loss of Weiner’s seat in NY has much to do with that disgraced congressman’s unseemly exit, when you combine this with the loss of another seat in Nevada, and the pitiful selection of presidential candidates trotted out by the Republicans, one can only surmise that Democratic voters are showing how fed up they are with Obama. It’s no mystery really.

Despite the insults from the right that Obama is a ‘socialist’ etc., the reality is  he is a most Republican Democratic president. People are giving up one-by-one on that Hope and Change canard. Afghanistan rages on. Gitmo remains open for business. Torture is ongoing. But the real doozy of course is high unemployment and a dismal economy. Here’s where the weak Republican field comes in. Americans still trust Obama more than Republicans when it comes to the economy.

Despite Obama’s fiery speech on jobs the other night, Americans are losing that trust, especially those who bought his spiel in 2008. There is no consistent messaging from Obama and his party is all over the place. Americans have no idea any longer what the Democratic party stands for. They do know what the Republicans stand for – No. And in this economy, that message is a strong one.

Despite all this, Obama as a man remains popular. Like good guy Daniel Sedin, and his fine brother, that may win you some games but you won’t win the big prize turning the other cheek and giving in to your opposition. By tradition, Americans like the strong guy, the man who stands for what he and they believe in. Obama believes in capitulation.

Why nobody on the Democratic side has stepped up to challenge Obama for 2012, I’m not really sure. Even if it just lit a fire under the president’s ass, that may be enough. He has a sad bunch of idiots on the other side, it should be a landslide for Obama. Watch. Like NY and Nevada last night, if Obama is not challenged from his own side, it could be a bumpy – and tragic – ride in 2012.
