Assholes. This is not how you win the public’s support, especially young people. Other than that Stanley Cup riot (and its predecessor in 1994), Vancouver is a peaceful city. The only violence I ever hear about is between gangs, mostly out in Surrey or Richmond.
I live across the street from the courthouse in the centre of the city. I hardly ever see police cars and never worry about my safety – ever. I walk every day among the homeless, the rich, the druggies, the old, the young. I’ve lived all over the world and never felt so safe walking on my own late at night or in large crowds. And I have never felt so free.
Chief among the recommendations is getting rid of “large scale public events.”
“Do not have large scale public events with ‘festival seating/standing’ that concentrate large crowds of young persons – particularly the young ‘hooligan’ demographic – who have the propensity for public drinking in a small area,” the review says.
Look, you can’t limit public events out of fear of ‘young person’ and ‘hooligans’ in the same sentence. Where the fuck is your PR department, Vancouver Police? Or, do you care?
