One of the overriding traits of the right-wing American fundamentalist movement is the total lack of compassion outside their own personal circle. The modern ‘tea party’ movement is part of that inclusivity that treats the world as an enemy. Like an onion, these religious wingnuts peel away acts of kindness and benevolence until there are none.
There are not many layers to this onion. If you do not play ball – and I mean root and holler and do not question the elders – you are relegated to the minors. Look at what happened to Chris Wallace after he asked crazed Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann, ‘are you a flake’?
The insular world of country club wingnuttery imploded. Their favourite boy of the airwaves dissed mother superior! With those three words, Wallace went in an instant from fire-breathing David taking on Jon Stewart’s Goliath to the minor leagues.
Asking a person known for outright lies and gross exaggerations if they are a flake is not a wild, rude question. It is in fact a superb opportunity for the askee to spiel off a sane and cogent answer and resurrect a glow of sanity for the benefit of the non believers. Which Bachmann more or less did. Now that Wallace has come out and apologized profusely, all should be forgiven, yes? So all is well in the wild world of the Fox News-GOP-wingnut onion, right?
Wrong. The rightblogs are whipping Wallace with a frenzy. The press is upset with Mike Wallace’s wayward son. And Michele Bachmann refuses to forgive poor Chris. He is alone at the moment, still dutifully carrying water for the big boys and girls, but he’s also being burned at the stake. Such is the life of a Fox News journalist who crosses his bosses. And Michele Bachmann is every inch his deity.
Chris, your god is a jealous god and forgiveness does not come easily, if at all. The onion has only so many layers and you peeled back one too many. You better slam together some liberal bashing and Michele celebrating news stories right quick. Only then will get once again to kiss the ring on the finger of the anointed one.
