I was just reading this article here on the Edmonton Journal website about Tory MLAs being paid to sit on Tory-only committees.
Now, the existence of these committees didn’t surprise me, I knew they existed. What did surprise me was a quote from Scott Hennig, the Alberta Director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. In his quote, Hennig mentioned that these changes were implemented in May 2008:
“The way we pay our MLAs has long been ridiculous, but it got a lot more ridiculous in May 2008 when they made these changes,” he said.” – Scott Hennig as quoted by Edmonton Journal
Now, this quote caught my attention, because back in August, Tory MLA Johnathan Denis had boasted about how MLAs had put a salary freeze in place for 2009. When I pointed out that I didn’t find a salary freeze that impressive in light to the massive increases that had been implemented in 2008 to what MLAs were paid to serve on committees, Johnathan Denis denied that these increases had occurred.
So, what was printed in today’s Journal seems to contradict what Johnathan Denis said on Twitter back in August.
