I just learned that Jack Layton passed away from cancer much too young early this morning, surrounded by his family. He certainly made history for the federal NDP and contributed a lot and still had much to contribute. He will be remembered as a leader who rose to many challenges with courage, like continuing to lead his party while undergoing treatments for prostate cancer and running an election campaign following hip surgery.
My last positive memory of him will be his leading that filibuster against Bill C-6 which, at least, brought awareness of the plight of not only Canada Post workers, but of the working man.
I think it’s safe to assume that the country is in mourning for the most part and I can only hope that the partisan sniping and witch hunting can be put to rest during this time for the respect of Jack Layton and for both his political and his personal family.
Jack Layton, may you rest in peace. Condolences and deepest respects to Olivia Chow and their family and friends and the NDP.
