No Jonathan Kay, Mark Steyn is not a "thoughtful, mainstream thinker"

Today’s NatPo column by Jonathan Kay shows how he is as guilty as any right wing journalist in exploiting the current climate of fear and hate against the left. He is not the only one. His paper promulgates hate for the left on a ongoing basis. It unabashedly promotes the Conservative party 24/7. But today’s column by Kay hits a new nadir. By attempting to absolve hate speakers like Pam Geller and Mark Steyn for their inspirational role in the Norwegian murders, Kay undoes any credibility he and his paper have ever attempted to claim.

It’s an embarrassing column that claims Steyn, a writer for far-right blogs and the most extreme of the conservative MSM, is a reputable mainstream journalist. Using Steyn, Kay excuses himself and his fellow right wing hacks for any accountability in stirring of feelings of hate and retribution against the forces that Kay so despises – the left and all its associated leanings.

Jonathan Kay ups that ante by clearly misrepresenting the stated beliefs of Anders Breivik, not so different from his own, or those of Geller and Steyn. That is not to say that Kay, Geller or Steyn are about to go on a shooting spree. But their ideological fingerprints are all over the comments of their rabid followers, some of whom, like Breivik, may have nothing to lose.

By running away from the reality of the Norwegian slaughter and by attempting to absolve those who inspired it, Kay practices the most cynical of a tragic journalism. It is cowardice, pure and simple. You think Murdoch’s scandals are merely an exception? Read Jonathan Kay and the National Post and think again. It goes much deeper than hacking and paying off cops. It’s about promoting exclusively the Conservative brand of insidious propaganda and hiding from responsibility for one’s actions when caught red handed.
