I don’t understand why Alberta and Saskatchewan feel so misunderstood and persecuted and hard-done-by all the time. Fact of life: Canada’s population is not fairly distributed across the country and it never will be. Most of our people live in Ontario and Quebec, with several million more in Vancouver.

Cathie from Canada: Cold weather blues and other news
So pending Twitter’s possible demise, I have now signed up at Mastodon and at Tribel — I’m not sure either of them can work as easily as Twitter did so we’ll see how it goes. Here are my links to these sites, if you have to find me someday soon:
Continue readingViews from the Beltline: Gain Danielle Smith, lose Deena Hinshaw—not a fair exchange
On Monday Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, was in effect fired. Thus our new premier, Danielle Smith, kept a campaign promise. We get Danielle Smith, a conspiracy-spouting separatist; we lose Deena Hinshaw, a highly qualified medical professional. What is Alberta coming to. Hinshaw was the only reasonably
Continue readingSaskboy's Abandoned Stuff: Methane EMIT
There’s a European satellite watching for methane pollution. It spotted a big leak in Alberta. ISS has a camera called EMIT attached and it can see methane plumes on Earth. The data is public, but not as easy as surfing around like on Google Earth to map it. “Jan Gorski,
Continue readingViews from the Beltline: Alberta’s very own tax cut fiasco
A recent tax cut for the rich managed to achieve international notoriety. Former British Prime Minster Liz Truss, a neo-liberal zealot à la her idol Margaret Thatcher, ushered in her term with a generous tax cut for Britain’s high income earners. It got quite the response: the exchange rate of

Edmonton has been doing a fine job of selecting some beautiful architecture to grace the river valley.
Continue readingViews from the Beltline: Why I support Collin May’s lawsuit
In May of this year, lawyer Collin May was appointed by cabinet order as chief of the Alberta Human Rights Commission after serving on the commission for three years. Then he was “outed.” Some sleuth discovered that in 2009 May had written a book review that supported the thesis that
Continue readingViews from the Beltline: Spare us the dogma, ladies
Normally, I am pleased to see women emerge as political leaders. We need more women in positions of leadership in our governance. What we do not need are more free-market ideologues. And, unfortunately, we just got two of them, both elected to leadership by their parties, not by the people.
Continue readingViews from the Beltline: The amazing Mr. Madu
Jason Kenney warned us. Prior to stepping down as premier, he suggested it was important he stay on to prevent the UCP from being taken over by “lunatics” and “kooky people.” But after getting barely lukewarm support from his party on a leadership vote, he stepped down. In any case,
Continue readingViews from the Beltline: Alberta, a renewables leader?
OK, Alberta creates more greenhouse gasses than any other province. Let’s get that out of the way. We are, after all, the country’s major oil and gas producer—being the emissions villain naturally follows. And it’s not only oil and gas. Early in this century, 74 percent of the generating power
Continue readingDead Wild Roses: CTV News – Supporting Female Erasure in the Name Gender Identity – RPOJ Revived!
Well here we be in 2022 and for some reason the news media seems to have forgotten some very basic facts about the human species. Humans are exclusively a sexually dimorphic species – that is males produce small motile gametes and have their physiology arranged around that aspect of reproduction
Continue readingDead Wild Roses: The Alberta NDP Thinks That Female Sport is “Transphobic”
Hey folks, I’m just here watching the NDP continue to betray women and their hard fought for rights in society. Janis Irwin, of course is at the forefront of deciding that we should be including men in female sports, spaces, and services? Why? Because these men have special gender feelings
Continue readingViews from the Beltline: How Alberta populists wrecked conservatism
Brian Mulroney recently said he no longer recognized himself in the Conservative Party. I’m no conservative, but I sympathize with him. The current Conservative Party just isn’t the conservative party we knew for most of our history. It seems to be focussed on the economy at the expense of everything
Continue reading52 Ideas: When I watch the United Conservative Party (UCP) Leadership race, one question always comes to the fore: do the UCP leadership candidates realise that in five to ten year Alberta will have serious problems in retaining our economic position in this world?
In 2008, Tesla rolled out its boutique electric car. It was called the Tesla Roadster. At that time, the Roadster had a big sticker price: $109,000 USD. Based on a Lotus chassis, the Tesla Roadster did have some impressive stats. For example, it could achieve 394 km on a single
Continue readingViews from the Beltline: My political philosophy revealed by a surprising source
Reading the latest issue of my favourite magazine, Alberta Views, I encountered an article that, to my surprise, neatly summed up my political philosophy. Surprised because I’ve never expressed it quite so clearly myself and surprised because the article was written by a conservative—which I most definitely am not. The

Shops selling meat and deli products are at the forefront of spaces that “need to be safe” in Canmore for gender magic individuals. “A food company in Canmore is facing a backlash over a transphobic response to a donation request by Canmore Pride. As the Canmore Pride Society prepares for
Continue readingDead Wild Roses: The Alberta NDP Does Not Know What a Woman Is
I was recently texted by my local NDP office with regards to getting a sign for the upcoming Alberta provincial election. This is how it went: So no, you cannot count on my vote because you are participating in the erasure of females in our society. Allow me to provide
Continue readingDead Wild Roses: Female Erasure now Featured in Alberta Health Services
I post this letter written to Alberta Health Services regarding the experience one Albertan woman had in the context of the language being used in a letter to her regarding pap testing. She has given me permission to reprint her letter in hopes that more Albertan women will also write
Continue readingViews from the Beltline: Sundre and the death of satire
I wrote a post a couple of years ago entitled “Everything isn’t racism.” Well, it still isn’t. However, people will find what they go looking for and apparently a lot of people go looking for racism everywhere. Even at a small rodeo in southern Alberta. The town of Sundre recently
Continue readingViews from the Beltline: Albertans happy to see Kenney’s back, but who’s next up?
Jason Kenney tried hard to convince Albertans that he was one of them. He failed to even convince members of his own party. In a confidence vote, he could only muster 51 percent support, a slight majority but hardly enough for him to continue on as leader. He sensibly announced
