Chris Selley goes PoMo

On why the Kenney/StuntTV faux-citizenship story doesn’t matter:

I can’t help wondering: Just how “real” do we imagine TV news normally is? Do we think interview subjects really spend half the day prowling the halls at work, at roughly the pace of a cameraman walking backwards, worriedly perusing freshly printed documents? Just how much of any given interview is the network showing us, and how representative is it of the whole?

Hyperreality is the name of the media game. But for a working journalist, it seems almost existentially risky to admit it. I don’t know whether to salute Chris for bravery or merely laugh out loud in delight.

For those of us in on the joke, what’s “reeeeal” these days? Have it your way. 🙂
