Mid-August: time for an update…

Holy Jeez, this summer is just whipping by. One moment is mid-July and 35 degrees, and the next is an early August morning and I’m freezing my butt off on the back of a dragon boat…

Anyhoo, I thought an update was in order.

E-B writer extraordinaire Kristen Smith has been diligent in her efforts to keep her intake to food produced within 100 miles of The ‘Wood the last two weeks; in keeping with the spirit of the challenge, and to avoid withering glares from the desk outside my office, I’ve tried to keep some of my food purchases to stuff produced within that same radius. It meant I picked up some really good produce at the Collingwood Farmer’s Market the last two weekends, along with some pepperettes (which got snarfed up by Son No. 1), but I still haven’t found a suitable excuse to explain the appearance of the neon gummy worms on my desk…

On the Wakestock front, I ventured behind the grain terminals for the first time since the event came to Collingwood (my video of the the experience here). What I saw, and heard, was a fairly well-run event featuring a lot of rambunctious and semi-tipsy — but otherwise well-behaved — young people (listen to me, sounding like an old man…). Also, I smelt quite a bit of weed, and heard considerable use of the F-bomb (again, me sounding like an old man…) And, I noted a considerable amount of garbage — as did this person. Not only behind the elevator, but right down Heritage Drive. By Tuesday, however, it appeared to be mostly cleaned up, thanks to the assistance of the CCI Fighting Owls football team.

But it’s still an issue the town would like dealt with, based on the comments of PRC director Marta Proctor to council on Monday night…

Goal-setting: For those of you who aren’t into Twitter, and don’t follow my ‘tweeting’ on a regular basis, an update on the goal mentioned previously (as I’ve had a couple of queries)…

About 10 years ago, I was a very unhealthy 220; I joined the Y, and over the course of the year lost 50 lbs. As these things go, the weight gradually crept up, so in the last couple of years — while fairly active — I’ve been hovering in the 205-to-210 zone. At the end of May, I decided to make a concerted effort to drop the weight, as even though I’m healthy, it’s not so healthy to be dragging around those extra pounds.

It’s meant a lot of cardio at the Y, and a lot of fruit and vegetables — and very little in the way of treats (aside from the occasional neon gummy worm)…

I started off at 208, with a goal to hit 190 by the end of July; on July 31, I was 187. I’m now kicking around the 182 mark. I haven’t really thought about the next target; 10 years ago, when I hit 170, I had people coming up to me thinking I had some deadly disease, and I’m starting to get those same questions now…

Speaking of goal-setting, congrats to the ever-lovely Mariane McLeod, who also seems to have taken up a fitness cause in an effort to do a five-kilometre run this fall…
